Study Shows Side Businesses Everywhere In The UK PDF Print E-mail

A new study drives home the point that small businesses are a big deal.  According to Enterprise Nation and Staples, which were behind it, more than five million people in the UK earn some form of extra income while working from home.

The report dubbed this the "5 to 9" trend and stated, "Of the businesses being run part-time, 50% are growing and 26% of the owners expect to be going full time within the next 3 months/38% in over a year.  These part time ventures will soon become full time businesses - they represent an enterprise renaissance."

So it seems that businesses of the very small variety are doing quite well, which is good to hear.  In fact, the limiting factor in many of the less successful cases just appears to be the number of hours in a day; 42 percent of respondents said the only way they could see their side businesses growing is if they gave up their main jobs.

As for some tips on how to balance things, the study recommends, "Starting out in your spare time and from the spare room is the best way to start.  It allows you to build sales, confidence and cashflow whilst holding on to a salary.  As the business grows, so will your time commitment to it and, before you know it, you'll be enjoying the freedom and flexibility that comes with being your own boss."

The same approach will surely work well in the US, of course.
